[4K Ultra HD Review] - Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (2021)

If you haven't heard of the Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (R; 99 minutes), there's a reason why. It came out in the summer of 2021 when hardly anyone was going to theaters in fear of the pandemic. The film came and went as fast as it could, grossing only $70.3 million against a $70 million budget.

Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard is the sequel to 2017's action-comedy The Hitman's Bodyguard with Samuel L. Jackson, Ryan Reynolds, and Salma Hayek returning alongside director Patrick Hughes.

The sequel picks up several weeks (or months) after the first film with the suspended bodyguard Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) taking his therapist's advice and going on a sabbatical - a.k.a a vacation. R & R is short-lived when international con artist Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek) jumps out nowhere with her guns blazing and saves him from a bunch of bad guys. Her hitman husband, Darius (Samuel L. Jackson), has gotten himself in a bit of trouble with the mob, and she needs Bryce to help him get out of a jam.

The only thing Bryce wants to do is get far away from Mr. and Mrs. Kincaid. Sadly, his wish doesn't come true as the trio gets tangled up in a global plot involving a Greek shipping tycoon (Antonio Banderas). Bryce seeks out help from his estranged stepfather (Morgan Freeman) and learns, sometimes you shouldn't trust family.

Special Features include:
  • Ryan, Sam, Salma: One F'd Up Family
  • Gone Soft: The New Michael Bryce
  • Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard: #STUNTLIFE
  • On the set of Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard
  • Gag Reel
  • Theatrical Trailers

Final Thoughts

I only viewed bits and pieces of The Hitman's Bodyguard when it first premiered on HBO and don't remember much about it. I might've chuckled one or two times, but I wasn't that interested in the plot. I had zero expectations for the sequel, Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, and ended up laughing my ass off for the entire runtime. Yes, the film is stupid as it can get, and I understand why the critics didn't like it, but it's fast-paced, crazy, and entertaining. Did I also mention it's funny?

Overall, Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard is a ridiculously hilarious action sequel that easily surpasses its predecessor.
