Good Morning, Everyone!
I hope everyone had a good Labor Day. I never do anything special for Labor Day. It's just another day for me.
40th Birthday
My 40th birthday came and went like a snap of a finger. I'm not really into birthdays, to begin with, but it would have been nice if my relatives would send a simple card. I received one card from my parents, and that was it. Sending a texting message to my mother instructing her to tell me 'happy birthday' instead of texting directing me is lazy. This relative will go unnamed.
The only gifts I received were from my parents and a long-distant friend. My parents gave me $40 cash in my card (which I wished they hadn't done), two losing $5 lottery tickets (from my dad), and My Cousin Vinny on Blu-ray. My friend sent me a 40-count K-Cup Coffee Variety Pack.
Do I feel any older? No, not a bit. For some reason, many people get upset or have midlife crises when they turn 40, but I don't have a problem with getting older. I don't look 40. I don't feel 40.
What Am I Reading?
I have several books on my reading schedule for this week, fourteen titles, to be precise. I'm going to reread every original 007 by Ian Fleming in preparation for my two-week 007 review event starting on Sept. 24th. Twelve books are under 200 pages, and considering I already know the stories, it will be a snitch to reread them all. I want my memory fresh before I write the reviews. I've had the first draft written for Casino Royale for a year and a half, and all I need to do is make a few edits.

What's New On the Bookshelf?
Everyone seems to be excited for the big-budget remake of Dune headed for HBO Max in October. I, for one, could care less. The trailer for the film didn't 'wow' me. My distaste for it has something to do with my dislike for the 1984 film and 1965 novel. I recall my dad renting the movie on VHS shortly after Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted on television because he heard Patrick Stewart was in it. Even though I was young at the time (seven or eight years old), I thought the movie was a mess. Several years later, I attempted to read the massive 896-page paperback edition of Dune. I lost interest within a few hundred pages because I didn't understand it.
Other readers have told me to give the Dune series a chance. For the last year or two, I have bought four Dune eBooks on my Kindle that was on sale. And, now, I have added Paul of Dune to the collection. I'm hoping TOR (the publisher) will put more eBooks on sale before the remake's release. I might buy the soon-to-be-released Dune tie-in (aka the first book with a new cover) paperback if I come across it in stores.
Despite the fact my reading schedule is booked up for the next three months, I requested to review three titles on NetGalley. Why? Well, these books look good. The titles are - The Book Binder's Daughter by Jessica Thorne, Strong Bones by Robert J. Peterson, and Exploring Dark Short Fiction #6: A Primer to Ramsey Campbell, edited by Eric J. Guignard. When will I read and review them? Hopefully, sooner than later.

Is Dune that long? Yikes. I knew it was long but didn't remember HOW long. I read it as a teen and think and was wholly unimpressed. Will I watch the new one? probably yeah- I think the sandworms are cool, but not very enthused.
I believe the original hardcover was just over 400 pages. The paperback is 894 pages, according to Amazon. Once upon a time, I owned a paperback copy, and I remember it being over 800 pages. The 1984 movie is available on HBO Max. If I have time, I might give it another try.

ReplyDeleteWell, not adding to the TBR pile is always a nice break. I only added keeper copies myself this week (for the most part) and that was a relief!

Happy Birthday. Ya that Dune movie was not great. I tried to read the book as a teen but I don't think I even got 100 pages in, Keurig cups is a great bday present. Have a great week!
