BDSM in Fifty Shades of Grey

I was channel surfing and came across the edited version of Fifty Shades of Grey starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, and to my shock, I learned the movie is already five years old. Wow. Where does the time go? It seems like yesterday the film was playing at my town's one-screen theater, and it caused a bit of commotion. Why? Well, the theater usually plays only PG or PG-13 films, so a Rated-R flick was a big deal for a small midwestern town.

For those of you who need to know, no, I didn't see Fifty Shades of Grey on the big screen. I have never even seen the movie or its sequels (Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed), besides the bits and pieces I saw while channel surfing. And even though I'm a book lover, I have never read the original novels by E. L. James, though I did own the first novel on an eBook. Many years ago, a now-defunct eBook gift card company sent me an eBook gift card for Fifty Shades of Grey. Shortly later, I wrote a few posts for an adult toy website and was given gift cards as payment, which I used to purchase Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. I never got around to reading them. Later, I heard several bad things about the book series, so I deleted Fifty Shades of Grey from my Kindle and donated the paperback sequels to a thrift store.

I do regret not reading the Fifty Shades series. Or at least I should have given the original novel a try before labeling the series as trashy. To be honest, I have read a few horror and Harlequin novels that were far worse. While the BDSM theme might be taboo for some, it doesn't bother me a bit. I don't practice BDSM, but I know many singles and couples who do it for one reason or another.

Being single myself, I have visited almost every dating website known to man and stumbled upon many BDSM-themed dating websites. Well, it's not exactly dating, as it's pretty obvious most of these members are looking for Subs and Doms mistresses. From my understanding, it's more of a community of like-minded adults looking to spice up their love life. So if you're looking for a femdom, there's a good chance you can find a match wherever you are from or at least find someone nearby.

While the term BDSM first appeared in 1991, bondage and discipline practices have been around for centuries. Even in 2020, BDSM is a taboo subject, which is one of the reasons why bookstores, libraries, and some readers have challenged Fifty Shades of Grey. Nevertheless, the Fifty Shades books and movies do have a big fanbase, which explains why the author decided to retell the story from the point-of-view of Christian Grey in the novels Grey and Darker. I'm taking a wild guess that there will be a third book published soon because... why not?
