DVD Review - Unlikely Angel (1996)

I’m taking a wild guess there might be a few people wondering why I’m reviewing a movie starring Dolly Parton. There’s a simple answer - Unlikely Angel (Not Rated; 96 mins) costars the late Roddy McDowall. I grew up watching the original Fright Night flicks and The Planet of the Apes films, which all starred Roddy McDowall (minus Beneath the Planet of the Apes). I remember watching Unlikely Angel when it originally aired on CBS around Christmas 1996.

Directed by Michael Switzer, Unlikely Angel stars country singer Dolly Parton as Ruby Diamond, a lounge singer who dies in a car crash. Her spirit goes to the gates of heaven, where she meets Saint Peter (played by Roddy McDowall). He informs her she cannot enter heaven until she returns to Earth to perform a selfless deed.

Ruby returns to Earth and takes a job as a nanny for the Bartilson family. Ben Bartilson (played by Brian Kerwin) is a workaholic widower who has very little time for his children, Sarah and Matthew (played by Allison Mack and Eli Marienthal). Ruby has until midnight on Christmas Eve to fix this broken family.

Mill Creek Entertainment released the movie to DVD (Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart) earlier this year, which is weird because they should have released it near Christmastime. There are no special features or bonus extras. The disc has an English subtitle option. Included with the DVD is a movieSPREE digital code.

Final Thoughts

Unlikely Angel is a cute made-for-television holiday movie. Dolly Parton gives a fun performance as an angel trying to get her wings, and Roddy McDowall gives an excellent performance as Saint Peter. The rest of the cast is decent, and yes, this includes Allison Mack, and the less I say about her the better.

If you’re in the mood to watch a Christmas movie in July, then I recommend watching Unlikely Angel.
