I've spent the past week binge-watching the 1971-1972 Japanese series Return of Ultraman, which was recently released to Blu-ray ($39.98; 21 hrs 39 mins) from Mill Creek Entertainment, featuring all 51 episodes on a 6-disc set. There are no special feature or bonus extras ,but it set does come with a 24-page episode guide booklet. The series is also available on a Blu-ray Steelbook!

Return of Ultraman is the fourth series in the popular kaiju Ultra franchise, which first started with 1966's Ultra Q. The series centers around Hideki Go (played by Jiro Dan), a young race-car driver who was killed during the battle between the monsters Takkong and Zazahn but is brought back to life by Ultraman, an alien from Nebula M78 Land of Light who merged with him. Now Hideki can transform into Ultraman Jack to defend Earth against the kaiju monsters. Along side him are the elite members of "MAT" (Monster Attack Team), a team of humans stationed at the undersea base in the seabed of Tokyo Bay.

Final Thoughts

If you're a fan of stuntmen wearing monsters costumes and running amok on a miniature scale cities, then you're probably the right audience for Return of Ultraman, which is a pretty decent followup to original Ultraman. Each episode is action-packed with plenty of kaiju entertainment.

The picture and sound qualities are excellent for all the episodes. There's no English dubbing, so all the episodes are in Japanese, which didn't bother me a bit. The dialogue in Japanese movies and television series always gets changed for American audiences, resulting in confusing plots and too many campy moments, so I'm more than glad the episodes have their original audios. There are English subtitles for each episode.

Overall, the Return of Ultraman Blu-ray is a must-have for any Ultraman fan!
