Blu-ray Review - UglyDolls: Sing-Along Edition

*This is a sponsored review. All opinions are 100% mine.

Blu-ray; DVD
I must be living under a rock because I wasn't aware there was such a thing as an UglyDolls toyline, let alone a feature film that was released to theatres earlier this year. I only recently became aware of what the UglyDolls were when I was sent a a review copy of the Blu-ray Combo Pack which was just released this week by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. It was also released on 4K Ultra HD, DVD, and Digital HD.

Directed by Kelly Asbury and produced by Robert Rodriguez, UglyDolls features the talented voice cast of Kelly Clarkson (The Star, “The Voice”), Nick Jonas (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Janelle Monáe (Hidden Figures, Rio 2), Blake Shelton (The Angry Birds Movie, “The Voice”), Pitbull (“Empire,” Epic), Wanda Sykes (“Black - ish,” Bad Moms) and Gabriel Iglesias (Ferdinand).

UglyDolls (PG; 88 minutes) is set in a hidden world within our own where newly manufactured dolls are given anthropomorphism and are assigned to be the perfect toy to a specific child. Any dolls that are deformed during manufacturing gets tossed into another hidden world called Uglyville where UglyDolls can live a peaceful life. Well, that's until one curious doll named Moxy (voiced by Kelly Clarkson) wants to learn what's beyond her home. Alongside her pals Lucky Bat (voiced by Wang Leehom), Ugly Dog (voiced by Pitbull), cynical baker Wage (voiced by Wanda Sykes), and Babo (voiced by Gabriel Iglesias), Moxy travels to the Institute of Perfection, a place where human dolls are trained to be the perfect toy.

Let's just say they're not exactly welcomed there by the Institute's toyleader,  Lou (voiced by Nick Jonas) and a few other dolls. However, Moxy and friends are determined to learn how to be a perfect toy so they can one day find a child to love.

Bonus Features include:
  • Sing-Along Edition
  • Sing-Along Tease – A small taste of the big fun the Sing - Along Edition provides.
  • Fun with the Cast of UglyDolls – Watch the cast of UglyDolls play fun games that showcase their unique talents.

Final Thoughts

UglyDolls is a cute heartwarming musical adventure that delivers a beautiful message to young children about accepting who you are and being kind to others. The computer animation is wonderfully done and the script is sharp with many funny moments. There are many "peppy" songs throughout the 88-minute film but the music isn't there just to entertain, as the tunes are there to help tell the story. And these songs are very catchy, especially the ones sung by the powerhouse Kelly Clarkson.

The picture and sound qualities are topnotch on the Blu-ray. There aren't too many special features beyond the Sing-Along version of the film, which shouldn't be a problem as I have a feeling most kids probably don't care much for the bonus features to begin with.

Overall, UglyDolls is a charming animated film. Prior to writing this review, I'd learn the mainstream critics didn't care much for this film and that it didn't too do to well at the box office. That's a shame because UglyDolls is one of the better animated movies out there. Here's hoping it finds a new life on home video and VOD.
