Available now from Dragon Moon Press is the fantasy adventure Slither by author Melody Steiner
The author has taken a few minutes out
of her busy schedule for a Q&A about her novel.
Apparently, when I was very young. I have a notebook full of sloppy kid handwriting featuring stories about rainbows. I don’t know why, but I was really fascinated with rainbows as a kid.
What was your first book/story published?
This one, actually.
What inspired you to write Slither?
The book came to me one summer while I was working as a student in a library. I was tasked with pulling old checkout cards out of the backs of the books. I still have a stack of cards with the original story written out on them.
What character in Slither is the most/least like you, and in what ways?
Probably Ryrick. He’s a nice old geezer. Not particularly astute or talented. A good, responsible, parental person who gets along well with his daughter.
What is your favorite part in Slither?
I like the part where Elanor makes a female friend. She’s such a lonely person prior to that, and she doesn’t see the value in human connections. Meeting Patience is a turning point for her, emotionally.
What was the hardest part to write?
The end—because it could’ve gone in so many different directions (and has! in prior iterations of the book, but it never felt quite right).
What would your ideal career be, if you couldn't be an author?
I'm a librarian and proud of my noble profession.
Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?
I guess we’ll find out soon.
What well-known writers do you admire most?
Right now, I’m really delving into fantasy books written by women of color. I’m building a list to read, but here are a few names: NK Jemisin, Nalo Hopkinson, K Tempest Bradford, and Nnedi Okorafor.
Do you have any other books/stories in the works?
Yep. If you liked Xena or The Legend of Korra, I’ve got a story for you…
