I’ve always loved books. When I was twelve, I couldn’t find a novel that covered a topic I was interested in at my local library, so I sat down and wrote the novel I wanted to read. I wrote it long hand. Terrible stuff, but I enjoyed reading it!
What was your first book/story published?
My first non-fiction book was a critical bio of Kurt Vonnegut. My first novel was The Smartest Kid in the World (a children’s novel written for children 6-9.
What inspired you to write Death & Donuts?
Death and Donuts was inspired by a conversation I had with someone on a trip my wife and I took to Florence, Italy. It is the third volume of a paranormal mystery series but stands alone.
What character in Death & Donuts is the most/least like you, and in what ways?
Andy in Death and Donuts is sexy and dead –clearly the character the least like me.
What is your favorite part in Death & Donuts?
I enjoyed the comic sequences with a very overweight and arrogant medical researcher.
What was the hardest part to write?
The part dealing with an extremist group because I wanted to be sure I wasn’t describing an actual group.
What would your ideal career be, if you couldn't be an author?
I had wonderful fun as an industry analyst and market research executive –I had to learn something new every day and loved every minute.
Do you read reviews of your books?
If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing? I’m usually more interested in tracking the number of reviews, but I’ve been known to read a particularly bad review. For the most part I ignore the reviews although sometimes I suspect competitors are trying to lower my average star rating and that bothers me.
What well-known writers do you admire most?
Michael Connelly, Daniel Silva, and David Brin.
Do you have any other books/stories in the works?
I’m half-done with a cosy mystery and half done with a science fiction novel.
