As one year ends and a new one begins, old resolutions are forgotten and new ones are created. The majority of people use the new year as a time to start over and begin anew, making new goals, resolutions, and ambitions.

The long-awaited sequel of To Kill a Mockingbird was finally released in 2015. Harper Lee, the brilliant mind behind both books, offers fans of To Kill a Mockingbird a peak inside the life of Scout, Jem, and Atticus, nearly 20 years into the future where the original took place. Set during the civil rights movement, the book addresses many of the same themes as the first book did, but the reader sees it from the perspective of adult-Scout instead of child-Scout. Harper Lee brings the classic story back to life with this amazing novel.

2. Divine Purpose School Workbook

Technically, this book is part of an online workshop; however, due to its amazing subject matter on positivity and finding your purpose in life, it had to be added to the list. The Divine Purpose 101 workshop is created for anyone who is interested in finding their purpose in life and how to live out that purpose in a passionate, life-sustaining way. For those ready to make a lifestyle or career change, this workshop is one of the best places to start.

3. Orphan Train

This novel has steadily been growing popularity, as Christina Baker Kline weaves a brilliant picture of the tragedies surrounding the stock market crash. While many people have studied the Great Depression and have heard stories of the suffering it caused, many have never heard the story Kline depicts in Orphan Train. This novel follows the story of a young girl of Irish descent and the many other orphans who were shipped to the Midwest. This heart-breaking novel allows readers the chance to see inside a time they otherwise never would have known.

4. The Book Thief

Set in Nazi Germany in 1939, this bestseller describes the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster child, who steals books in order to survive the horrors around her. Markus Zusak provides readers with a different portrayal of the time period, as he focuses on how literature can soothe the soul.

5. The Giver

Though this book was written over 20 years ago, with it recently being adapted for the big screen, the book has made a resurgence in popularity. Lois Lowry depicts a dystopian society in The Giver where those living there do not feel emotions and cannot see color. The book focuses on Jonas, a young boy reaching adolescence, who receives a critical and special role in his community, one that completely changes his life forever.

6. The Nightingale

Kristin Hannah takes readers into the world of women during WWII. Many books written about this time period tend to focus on the familial and religious struggles of this time, and this book offers readers another insight into the tragedies surrounding WWII. Focusing on two sisters living in German-occupied France, Hannah takes the readers on a journey they will never forget.

7. Paper Towns

John Green, author of the increasingly popular novel and film, The Fault in Our Stars, brings readers into the life of Quentin Jacobsen, a young teenager who has spent his life being in love with Margo Roth. When Margo comes to Quentin with a proposal for help with a prank, he is taken on an incredible adventure that not only helps Quentin discover who he is, but also who Margo actually is. This coming of age story is one both adults and young adults will fall in love with, as Green’s wit and humor reminds everyone of what it is like to be young.
