Is Going to the Movies Still Worth It?

Chances are you’ve likely noticed that in the past two decades, the price to a see a movie in theaters has skyrocketed. First, you have to purchase a ticket, which according to the National Association of Theatre Owners costs on average almost $9. On top of that, if you want one of the popcorn and soda combos, you’re likely going to be paying another $10. Add it all up and a night at the movies surely can do damage to a wallet.

Having said all that, why do we still find ourselves standing in long lines to see the latest films? Aside from the fact that films in theatres aren’t yet available at home, one could argue that you pay for the movie theatre experience. Not only does going to the movies get you out of the house, but sitting in a comfy chair, with the lights down low and sound up high, the screen is huge and there are no interruptions. But nowadays, these are all things you can get at home!

For all these reasons, one can see the appeal of going to the movies, however now, more than ever, there seem to be some drawbacks to seeing a film in a theater.

Aside from the cost of a movie nowadays, many people find themselves skipping the theater for the three big following reasons:

  • Videos On Demand are Easier to Access – You’ve got to love technology! One of the main reasons why people are forgetting about the movies is because they have discovered VOD (videos on demand). Television providers such as http://saveontvdirect.com/ offer access to some of the latest films released on video for just a few dollars. Most providers offer a library of movies that you simply order from your television and watch at your convenience. Some of the films are even still in theaters when they are released via video on demand.
  • Overcrowding – Chances are if you want to see a new movie in theatres the weekend it’s released, you’re going to be for a night of waiting. Long lines and some stranger rubbing elbows with you in the dark, or walking in front of you constantly while the movie is playing doesn’t really sound all that great. Couple that with the fact that you probably have to get your tickets weeks in advance, and staying home seems a bit more appealing.
  • Improved Home Theater Technology – Again thanks to technology, more people are beginning to take advantage of technology and create their own theater quality experiences from home. With 3D televisions, surround sound speaker systems, a solid Blu-Ray collection and a remote control, you can pretty much get the theater experience on your own terms, without the overcrowding and for much cheaper.

While going to the movies is still a great occasional date or nice to do when you want to see a promising new movie, can you honestly say that it is still worth it?

  1. For me, going to the movies is a way of getting out of the house for a few hours. I spend a lot of time at home, catching up on stuff on my PVR or watching various TV shows on DVDs, so for me, going to a movie is a way of getting away from the TV for a few hours.
