Frugal Halloween Costume Ideas

The Halloween holiday is right around the corner, and what better ways to be prepared for it than to find money-saving ideas. It’s understandable how difficult the search for the perfect costume can be, especially when the majority of them are so expensive. Here are some DIY costume projects and tips for you and your family to keep your Halloween enjoyable and thrilling while staying on a reasonable budget.

Black Cat Costume

This costume idea is very simplistic. Wear solid black shoes, pants and a shirt. Tease your hair all around to create a mane-like look. Draw whiskers on your cheeks, color the tip of your nose black and your lips red or pink to give yourself a cat face. Finish off the costume by braiding yarn together to make a cat tail.

Bed Bug Costume

This idea would be great for kids. First, dress them up in their favorite pajamas. Then, make antennas with a headband and pipe cleaner craft supplies. Fix your face up with a colorful nose and rosy cheeks.

Super Mario Bros. Costume

Do you have overalls? What about solid red and green shirts? This costume is for you! Include matching red and green hats and toy wrenches and you have got Super Mario Bros. This is fun for both spouses and siblings.

Princess Costume

Recycling is key with this costume. If you have a princess costume that is too short on your daughter, try this easy fix. Use a solid pink or white top, then tuck in top of the princess costume to create a tutu. Include tights, ballerina slippers and a paper crown (or pick up a crown at the Dollar Tree for $1) and you’ve got yourself a princess!

Clark Kent/Superman Costume

This costume is super fun and is a two-in-one. Fix yourself or your child into Clark Kent, about to turn into Superman. Dress in your Sunday best: white button-down shirt, suit and tie. Beforehand, though, put on your favorite Superman Logo t-shirt to go under your suit. Make sure to unbutton 3 of the buttons to show off the Superman logo, so everyone can see that you’re about to transition into the awesome superhero! Add some Clark Kent fashion eyeglasses to finish off the costume.

Rock Star Costume

Do you have a Rock Band game guitar or microphone? A rock star costume may work great for you. Dress yourself up in some colorful, outlandish clothing. Snag some temporary color hair spray to make your hair wild. Include an abundant amount of makeup with rosy cheeks and fake eyelashes, while working on your Mick Jagger impersonation.

Be “Punny”-Looking

Many costume ideas are pretty easy and an obvious choice. Why not go as a pun? Try these ideas:

  • Pumpkin Spice: include a t-shirt with a pumpkin on it and add platform shoes and a British Flag and dub yourself as the 6th Spice Girl.
  • Cat Burglar: dress up as a cat and involve a black eye mask and a white money bag.
  • Big Deal: snag a white t-shirt and write “90% Off!!” and tell everyone you are a ‘Big Deal’.
  • Miss American Pie: find an American Flag shirt (or dress) and put the Pi Symbol in the middle. For a more in-depth idea, find a crown and sash like used in a pageant.
  • Cereal Killer: tape cereal boxes all over your body and hold a fake, plastic knife.
  • Sugar Mama/Sugar Daddy: tape candy wrappers all over your body while holding or strolling a baby doll.
