Review:

The science fiction genre seemed to dead on television, but SyFy aired a brand new series last spring which was a blend of Deadwood and Farscape. Tomorrow, Universal Studios Home Entertainment will be releasing Defiance: Season One on Blu-ray and DVD, which would make an excellent Christmas gift.

Defiance is the first television series to tie into a multi-platform video game, interconnected between the two to tell the overall story. The series/game is set in the year 2046, a time where humans and aliens have lived together for over 30 years. Defiance is a small frontier town, built over the ruins of St. Louis, and is lead by Mayor Rosewater (played by Julie Benz.) A former Marine/drifter, Nolan (played by Grant Bowler), is the Chief Lawmaker of Defiance. Both of them try to set rules and regulations for the human and alien residents, but prejudices and politics threaten to destroy the town’s peace.

Episodes on the three-disc set are:

  • Pilot - Defiance's lawkeeper and shield generator are both destroyed just as Nolan and Irisa arrive in town.
  • Down In The Ground Where The Dead Men Go - The traitor who destroyed the town's generator plans on setting off a nuclear reactor.
  • The Devil In The Dark - Deadly insects are released upon the town.
  • A Well Respected Man - While attempting to amend the affairs of a NeedWant employee, Kenya is abducted.
  • The Serpent's Egg - Irisa thinks she has found the man who tortured her as a child. Meanwhile, Nolan and Amanda are hijacked while on their way to Las Vegas.
  • Brothers In Arms - A bounty hunter arrives in town to look for a weapons designer.
  • Goodbye Blue Sky - The dormant alien feet circling above Earth collide, sending fragments down upon the town.
  • I Just Wasn't Made For These Times - Nolan and Tommy find a NASA commander in hypersleep aboard a fallen Ark.
  • If I Ever Leave This World Alive - The Irath-flu has invaded the town.
  • The Bride Wore Black - A ghost from Kenya's past comes back to haunt her when a human skeleton is found in the walls of the NeedWant.
  • Past Is Prologue - Amanda's chances of winning the election becomes in jeopardy when Nolan kills a Castithan in self-defense.
  • Everything Is Broken - Its Amanda vs. Datak on Election Day!
Bonus Features:
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel
  • Defiance: A Transmedia Revolution
  • Making Defiance
  • Behind the Scenes with Jesse Rath

I don't keep up with the shows on SyFy, but I was surprised to find an original science-fiction series on the air when the channel is overruled by horrible so-called reality shows. I'm from Missouri, so I did enjoy the fact that Defiance was built over the fallen St. Louis, Missouri. The production values seem to be expensive, especially with the CGI war scenes. Some of the makeup and wigs reminds me of Farscape and all the political jargon from the Battlestar Galactica remake. The acting is pretty good for the most part. Overall, Defiance: Season One is an intriguing start to a new series and is coming out just in time for the holiday season; I only wish I don't have to wait until next summer to watch season two.
