In book two of the Taker Trilogy, the immortal Lanore, aka Lanny as he friends call her, is wanted for murder in the United States for the unknown man (her love, Jonathan St. Andrew) that was found in the small town of St. Andrew, Maine. She barely escaped with the help of her now lover Dr. Luke Findley, who has left his children and his life for her.

They reside in London, where Lanny has decided to giveaway all of the wonderful treasures she has collected, some stolen, over the years. After the death of Jonathan, she wanted to start anew by uncluttering her life. With Luke’s help, she has boxed up the treasures and donated them to different museums around the world. Lanny was looking forward to having a life with Luke, but then she gets a strange feeling that her taker Adair has been awaken from his confinement, the very one that she personally put him in, and she knows that nothing will ever be the same.

After some constructions workers began demolishing an old house, Adair is freed after being trapped inside a tomb for over 190 years! He has one agenda on his mind - revenge, but first he reconnects with one of his groupies, Jade, who is now wealthy. Adair quickly adjusts to the modern world and searches for the precious books that hold his magic spells, even the one that can turn anyone into an immortal. After a quick get rich scheme, Adair uses his new found wealth to search for Lanny, but she is smarter than he realizes as she doesn’t leave a trail for him to follow. Then he hires a computer expert to track a bank account from the 1800’s under the name Jonathan St. Andrew.

Adair takes some time and travels to St. Andrew, Maine as he has always been curious of the place where Lanny grew up. After visiting the sheriff’s office, he learns of the handsome man that was murdered in the woods. Using a bit of his charm and magic, he locates the unmarked grave of Jonathan St. Andrew. With his magic books at hand, he brings Jonathan back to life.

Meanwhile, Lanny fears for Luke’s safety and leaves him behind. She searches around the world for more of Adair’s groupies and a few of  her old friends. She knows that she can no longer run from her taker and the time has come to confront him once in for all.

I was excited to hear about The Reckoning book tour as I just read The Taker a few months ago and Gallery Books nicely sent me a copy to review. I love the fact that author Alma Katsu uses immortals instead of vampires, giving the story a new twist. I feel sorry for Luke, who left his kids and his profession so he can stay with Lanny, only for her to leave him in fear of what Adair would do to him. I was surprised to read that Lanny actually had loving feelings at one time for Adair, and so does he for her. I never liked the Adair’s character in The Taker, but as his back-story in Venice was told, I started to have an understanding for him and the origin of the immortal spell. The Reckoning is a fast-paced sequel that I could not put down, reading it in one night. Alma Katsu is becoming one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait for the third and final book in The Taker Trilogy to come out. I recommend the book to fans of the first, and for supernatural fans alike.

  2. I really enjoy reading your reviews thought this one doesn't particularly sound interesting to me just because of the style of it but your post made me kind of want to read it.
