Available now on Blu-ray from Lionsgate Home Entertainment is the Texas Chain Saw Massacre prequel LEATHERFACE. Directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, the film stars Stephen Dorff and Lili Taylor.
The film centers on a young Jedidiah Sawyer (aka Leatherface) being sent to a mental hospital after being accused of killing the sheriff's daughter. Ten years later, a riot occurs at the hospital and Jedidah (played by Sam Strike) escapes along side three other patients, who have all kidnapped a nurse named Elizabeth. The group tries to escape the sheriff (played by Stephen Dorff), who is hellbent on tracking down and killing Jedidah.
Instead of getting a regular theatrical release, LEATHERFACE was released exclusive via DirecTV, before it released on video on demand and limited theaters back in October. It received mixed to negative reviews from critics.

Do we really need another prequel in the Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchise? The answer is "No!" We already have the "The Beginning" prequel to the remake film and the sequel reboot Texas Chainsaw 3D, which the latter could be considered a messed up prequel, if someone is ever able to figure out the actual timeline of the movie. Then there's also the other Leatherface flick, which is the second sequel to the original film. Confused yet?
LEATHERFACE has a very simple revenge plot, along with plenty of gore that's to be expected from a slasher film. The acting from the entire cast is pretty good, though the performances from Lili Taylor and Stephen Dorff stood out the most. As an 'origin' story it sort of works, but in the end all the plot does is show us why Leatherface's face was disfigured and how he got his famous flesh mask.
Overall, LEATHERFACE has enough violence and nudity to keep fans of the franchise entertained. Just don't expect too much from the plot. Did this movie have to be made? No! However, it's not that bad of a watch, and the film serves as a decent reboot for a dying franchise.
