Review:

As many of blog followers already know, one of my favorite genres is Amish fiction. My love for the genre started twelve or thirteen years ago when I first read a Beverly Lewis title. At time she about the only Christian writer writing about the Amish life. Flash forward to to 2014 and there are several Amish fiction titles written by different authors being released every month. It is difficult to stay up-to-date with all these writers and if it wasn't for reviewing titles for this blog, I would probably play it safe and only read the books by authors that I'm familiar with. That being said, I signed up to read A Mother's Secret by Amy Clipston and though the name sounds somewhat familiar, I don't believe I have read any of her other novels before.

A Mother's Secret centers on thirty-one-year-old, Carolyn Lapp, who is a forgiven outcast in her Amish community of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, as she had a son, Benjamin, out of wedlock. She knows at her age, a male suitor is nearly impossible, especially in this community where no Amish man would even look at her. Her family have tried to set her up with a husband, but she wants to get married for the right reason - love.

After her son, Benjamin, gets into a little bit of trouble at an auction, Carolyn crosses paths with a horse breeder, Joshua Glick, whom she is instantly attractive to and vice versa with him. Her dreams of finding her true love may finally come true, but there is a slight catch. Joshua thinks Benjamin is her nephew and not her son.

Typically, Amish fiction romances' main characters are either set in their late teens or early 20s, but here we have a main character set in her thirties. And normally the plots involve a young Amish woman who dreams of finding a husband and starting a family, but Carolyn, the main character in this book, does desire to have a husband, but she already has a son, though she was never married. Amish romances can become a little cliched, but the author does a decent job crafting an original story with great characters. Overall, A Mother's Secret is a fast-paced Amish romance that tugs at your heart.
