Review: Call the Midwife: Season Three DVD

Arriving on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, is the hit BBC/PBS series, Call the Midwife, created by Heidi Thomas based on the memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth. A special feature includes "Inside Call The Midwife - Interviews With Cast and Crew."

Call the Midwife is set in the East End of London in the late 1950s and centers on a twenty-something nurse named Jenny Lee (played by Jessica Raine), whom works side-by-side with the midwives and nuns at the Nonnatus House.

The 2013 Christmas Special bridges the gap between the second and third season. A bomb is found in the district, causing the residents to be evacuated. Sister Julienne and the other Sisters help the homeless find shelter until the crisis is over. The former-nun, Shelagh, is planning her wedding to Dr Turner, but the wedding becomes in jeopardy when a family emergency occurs.

Episode One is set in 1959 and introduces the new Nonnatus House, as the old house was being torn down. There is also a new nun named Sister Winifred at the house to help out while Chummy tries to adapt at being a stay-at-home mother.

Jenny receives a promotion to "nursing sister," which causes a conflict between her and fellow nurse/midwife, Trixie (played by Helen George) in the second episode. Jenny's relationship with her boyfriend blossoms over the season, but a tragic accident will forever change her.

There is a lot happening in Call the Midwife: Season Three, besides the patients giving birth. Dr. Turner and Shelagh want to expand their family by adopting a child, but some past mistakes may get in their way. Though retired from midwifing, Sister Monica Joan wants to prove to everyone, including herself, that she is still useful. Chummy returns to being a nurse, but her life is challenged when her mother comes to stay. There is an additional arrival at the Nonnatus House, a new nurse named Patsy Mount.

I very seldom watch anything on PBS, but I did watch the Christmas Special last December. My plans were to watch the new season when it officially started, but it slipped my mind and season three started without me. Yes, I could have went online and read each episode synopsis, as the season had already aired in the UK on BBC, but this is one series I enjoy watching, so I patiently waited until it came out on DVD. Season three has many things going on, including a few new characters. Once again, Heidi Thomas does a wonderful job with writing memorizing scripts. All of cast gives great performances, as well. There may be only eight episodes (well nine if you count the Christmas Special), but a lot happens in them. Considering the series is returning for another Christmas Special and a fourth season next year, I was a little shocked at the ending of the episode eight. I don't won't to give away the ending, but I will say that one character's journey comes full circle. I am curious what Heidi Thomas has in store for the Nonnatus House next season. Overall, I enjoyed watching the Call the Midwife: Season Three DVD and I highly recommend it to others.
