Writing Tips Wednesdays: Giving 100%

Our society is built around coasting as much as possible. We coast at work; only doing 5 hours of work a day and messing around the other 3 hours. We coast at home; doing as few chores as possible to keep the mold at bay. We coast while helping others; giving just enough of time or money to prevent guilt.

Blame instant entertainment access, mega-cities, a culture of laziness, a sense of entitlement, or anything else that you want- but the fact remains, most of us tend to do as little as possible to get by.

I am guilty of this myself.

Recently though, I have been tired of just “getting by.” I want more from my life. My birthday is in March, and every year, I think of a new goal for myself. I consider March my own personal new year- and that is when I reflect on the past year and determine what direction to go for the next 12 months.

Last year, I committed to growing my blog and expanding my writing horizons. I was able to accomplish that goal- and in November, I won NaNoWriMo by writing over 50,000 words in 30 days.

This year, I want to do more. I don’t want to just be known for how much I can write, but for the quality of what I write as well. This year, I want to be the best writer I can be. A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about 8 authors that I find inspiring. These authors did not coast by on the least amount of work. They put a huge amount of effort into their work and it paid off.

When you put your whole self into writing, book reviews, or whatever else you do; it shows. It may take more effort and be a less pleasant ride, but it is worth it in the end. Big rewards go to people who put in big efforts. In the end, putting in more effort doesn’t have to be huge. It might be as simple as putting a little more thought into a blog post, or looking for new opportunities for your writing or work career.

I want to go for those big rewards by throwing 100 percent of myself into everything I do. I hope you’ll take the challenge along with me to become the best you this year- whether it is in writing, blogging, work, play, or whatever you are doing at the moment.

Life deserves our 100 percent.
