[DVD Review] - Power Rangers Megaforce: Ultimate Team Power

Believe it or not, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series premiered twenty years ago today, and the franchise is still going strong with the current series airing on Nickelodeon. On September 3, 2013, Lionsgate will release the first DVD volume of the new series, titled Power Rangers Megaforce: Ultimate Team Power, containing the first four episodes of the 20th season.

After Admiral Malkor orders insectoid Warstar aliens to attack Earth, an ancient guardian named Gosie (sent to Earth by his mentor Zordon), along with his faithful robot Tensou, selects five unique teenagers from Angel Grove and transforms them into Power Rangers. These five teenagers must now work together to defeat the rock beetle Scaraba, the human-abducting scientist Yuffo, the virus-spreading Virox, and the lightning-fast Dragonflay!

This single-disc set contains the following episodes:

  1. Mega-Mission
  2. He Blasted Me With Science
  3. Going Viral
  4. Stranger Ranger
  • Bonus Feature - "Power Rangers Morph Through 20 Years" Video

Final Thoughts

Megaforce returns to the fictional Angel Grove, California, with a new cast, costumes, Power Cards, Megazords, and villains, and an opening theme song that pays homage to the original series. The special effects have improved with each new series, as have some of the scenes from the Japanese Super Sentai series. The acting in the franchise has never been stellar, but the new cast, particularly the new Red Ranger, comes across as a little wooden to me. Perhaps this will change as the series continues with new episodes this fall, leading up to the second season of Super Megaforce in 2014. Power Rangers Megaforce: Ultimate Team Power episodes are generally fast-paced and action-packed. I recommend the DVD to both new and old fans. -- ★★★✰✰
