[Review] - Dusk's Darkest Shores by Carolyn Miller

Available on Paperback & Kindle.

About The Book

How can a meek wallflower help a returning war hero whose dreams are plunged into darkness?

Mary Bloomfield has no illusions. Her chances for matrimony have long since passed her by. Still, her circumstances are pleasant enough, especially now that she has found purpose in assisting her father with his medical practice in England's beautiful Lake District. Even without love, it's a peaceful life.

That is until Adam Edgerton returns to the sleepy district. This decorated war hero did not arrive home to acclaim and rest, but to a new battle against the repercussions of an insidious disease. Mary's caring nature cannot stand to see someone suffer--but how can she help this man see any brightness in his future when he's plunged into melancholic darkness, his dreams laid waste by his condition?

{Sunday Post} - Dusk's Darkest Shores, Son, and The Woman In the Window

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

Yeah, it's been over a month since my last Sunday Post. Due to depression, high anxiety, sinus infections, allergies, and earaches, I had to take a break from blogging. The weather here has been nauseating with unusually cool temperatures and an overload of rain, which is the cause of most of my ailments, minus the anxiety and depression.

The latter has more or less increased because of my grandmother's declining health. The nursing home opened back up by appointment only in either late March or April, and my mother has been trying to visit once a week. Then with the snap of a finger, my grandmother could no longer communicate or feed herself. According to the nurses, she didn't have a stroke, though I beg to differ as all the signs are in plain sight. What do I know, right? Anyway, supposedly she has a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection), which is the cause of her slurring. They gave her on antibiotics. Then nothing changed. The nurses ran more tests, and the UTI was still there, so she's back on antibiotics. I visited my grandmother on Mother's Day. She had no clue who I was. She thought her Mother's Day card read Mr. Christmas. Depending on which technician, nurse, or therapist answers the phone, my grandmother is either doing fine, more of the same, or going downhill fast. I wish the nursing home had sent her to a hospital, as the doctors there would have put her in liquids and ran the proper tests. I'm not a doctor, so my opinion doesn't matter.

So, in other words, the inevitable for my grandmother is around the corner. And the thought of it is the main reason for my current round of depression and anxiety.

What Am I Reading?

I'm finally getting around to reading Meant To Be by Jude Deveraux, though I haven't picked it up in several days. If my memory serves me correctly, I'm on Chapter 10.

[The Midnight Horror] - SON (2021)

The horror genre has changed significantly throughout the last decade. Minus a few supernatural flops, like this year's The Unholy, only studio-proven IPs (Halloween, The Conjuring, Saw, etc.) receive the red carpet rollout in theaters. The rest typically head straight to VOD or the $5 DVD bin at Walmart. With so many new low-budget horror films, it can difficult for me to keep up with all the release dates. RLJE Films released the occult-thriller SON (Not Rated; 98 minutes) to DVD and Blu-ray on May 18th. If I hadn't received a press release, I wouldn't have even known about this movie, which stars Andi Matichak, who co-starred in 2018's Halloween and will appear in its sequel Halloween Kill later this year.

[Review] - Goosebumps SlappyWorld: Monster Blood Is Back by R.L. Stine

Available on AMAZON.

If you're nearing 40, as I am, then more than likely, you grew up reading the Goosebumps books written by R.L. Stine (author of the popular teen Fear Street series). Just in case you don't know what I'm talking about, let me give you a history listen. Goosebumps was a hugely popular children's book series throughout the 1990s. From 1992 to the end of 1997, R.L. Stine published 62 Twilight Zone-like stories that gave every young reader nightmares. Goosebumps quickly became a brand name, starting with the Fox Kids television series that ran for 74 episodes. Spinoff books soon followed, such as Give Yourself Goosebumps, Tales To Give You Goosebumps, and Goosebumps 2000, and a slew of merchandise (bookmarks, games, toys, etc.). As fans became older, they moved on to other things, which resulted in the downfall of the franchise. After a hiatus, R.L. Stine returned to the world of Goosebumps with the spinoff series Horrorland in 2009, followed by two other spinoffs, Most Wanted and SlappyWorld, and two film adaptations, Goosebumps and Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.
