A New Look at The Roman Empire!

Comparing ancient civilizations can help today’s world understand growth and decline of cultures. Learn more about the world's greatest civilizations by studying the Roman Empire.

During Rome’s pre-history in the Bronze Age, Greek and Roman cultures contacted. By the Iron Age, around circa 1000 BC to circa 800 BC, huts started to crop up all over Rome. The Etruscans extended civilization to Campania and the Greeks sent colonists and explorers to the Italic Peninsula. The Roman world expanded for more than a millennium and Roman government continued to evolve from the Roman kings period to the Empire. Central Roman history occurs from approximately circa 200 BC to circa 200 AD, or the late Republic period to Severan emperors.

Roman Kings

In this fascinating period, seven kings ruled Rome. Some were Roman kings and others were Etruscan or Sabine. The cultures combined and the competition for land and creation of political alliances began. Rome grew about 350 miles from its radius during the period. Ultimately, the Roman people did not enjoy a monarchy and cast off this form of government. The last king sat until approximately 510 BC. During this period, Rome’s leaders expanded the power base and became a powerful entity in the ‘world’ of the time.

Early-Late Republic

After the last king was dethroned, a new type of leadership began. The principate, initiated by Augustus, continued through the end of circa 100 BC. The Republic lasted almost five centuries. The early republic ended as the Punic Wars began. The quest for power and the decline of the Empire occurred in sync. The people lost the sense of patriotism and no longer cared as much about the Republic. They no longer celebrated historical heroes and individuals instead became focused on personal power. The Gracchi told the people that the lower classes were all important, but the political reforms they embraced divided people. Blood was shed. Although Marius worked at reforming Rome’s army, Sulla worked against him. Marius’ relation by marriage, Julius Caesar, provoked Roman civil war. He became a dictator and was later assassinated by fellow consuls, calling an end to the Late Roman Republic.

When Will Fall Get Here?

I know the first day of Fall won't start until September 23rd, but I just wish the weather will start cooling down. In my opinion, it's a bit to hot for this time of year. It's typically not this hot on my birthday (which was yesterday)! And normally I can smell the fall weather in the air by now (Yes, the Fall has a scent!)

As you can see, Fall is my favorite season. I don't know if it has something to do with the fall weather or the fact that Halloween is just around the corner. Note: Halloween is my favorite holiday.

Speaking of Allhalloween, I'll be putting up my post later today about this year's Halloween event on here called "Halloween Madness."

Review:

I read romantic novels from time to time, as most of my blog readers already know, but for some reason I don't care much for watching romantic flicks. However, there was one movie that caught my eye when I saw it advertised back in the spring, it was titled The Age Of Adaline, which is arriving on Blu-ray and DVD tomorrow. The film is directed by Lee Toland Krieger and stars Blake Lively, Michiel Husman, Kathy Baker, Harrison Ford and Ellen Burstyn. Special Features includes an audio commentary with director Lee Toland Krieger, A Love Story for the Ages, Style Throughout the Ages, Discovering Young Harrison Ford: Anthony Ingruber, an Online Sensation and deleted scenes.

The film centers on 29-year-old Adaline Bowman (played by Blake Lively), who had died for a few minutes in a freak car accident. From that moment on, she no longer ages. She attempts to live life, but as her daughter Flemming grows older than her, she decides that she must never stay in the same place for very long. She must change her identity from time to time, so nobody will catch on to who she really is.

Fast forward to the present day, Adaline is once again planning on changing her identity that is until she meets a Ellis Jones (played by Michiel Huisman) at a New Year's Eve party. Despite the attraction, she is determined to ignore her heart and precede with moving away, but Ellis pursues her and eventually she lets down her guard. Taking advice from her aging daughter (played by Ellen Burstyn), Adaline agrees not to runaway again and begins a relationship with Ellis.

Review:

Do you recall watching a movie that was so stupid that it was actually enjoyable? Well, that's what I have always felt about the 1990 science-fiction comedy Spaced Invaders! Despite the fact that the film is set on Halloween Night, it was originally released in the spring! It was critically panned at the time and didn't do very well at the box-office. Over the years, the film has picked up a small following. Now on September 15th, Mill Creek Entertainment will be releasing Spaced Invaders on DVD & Blu-ray.

The movie centers on a small Martian spaceship with a small-minded crew (Captain Bipto, Blaznee, Lieutenant Giggywig, Dr. Ziplock, Corporal Pez) who picks up a signal that they thought was from their fleet, but in fact it was from a radio broadcast of Orson Welles' 1938 The War of the Worlds. The crew crashes their ship into a barn in Big Bean, Illinois and they make plans to invade Earth.

The pilot Blaznee stays behind to guard the spaceship and to keep an on eye on the Enforcer Drone, all while the others head into town with their Scout-in-a-Can robot. After an accident occurs that separates Captain Bipto from the rest of the crew, Lieutenant Giggywig, Dr. Ziplock and Corporal Pez attempt to proceed with the mission. Unaware to them, the town's celebrating Halloween and they easily blend in with the trick-or treaters, where they befriend the sheriff's daughter, Kathy.

Halloween 2015: Hanging Patient Prop

While the hot weather is a sign that summer isn't exactly over yet, the department stores are already getting ready for the fall with many of the them already stocking up on Halloween items.

Each and every year, I like to add at least one new Halloween decoration and luckily for me, I was sent a cool new item to test and out and review - the Hanging Patient Prop (retail $39.97) by Morbid Enterprises!

The prop features a life-size ghost/zombie polystyrene foam head with life-like hair. The shoulder and arms is made from a wire. The hand giant hands are made from hard plastic. The body is made of a mesh material that is stained with blood. The face is stained with blood as well. The eyes light up as bright blue (flashing) and require 3 cell batteries (which are included). The prop has a rope attached to the skull, so you can hang it up on your porch or in a tree.

Yes, Halloween Decorations can be expensive, but there are many dollar stores, thrift stores and Costume Discounters where you can purchase cheap props and goodies that will make your house pop out on Halloween night.

3 Reasons You Need a Writing Coach

Have you ever thought about getting a writing coach? A writing coach is a person who can help you find your place in the writing world and coach you toward becoming your best writing self. A coach acts similarly to a critique group, but with more purpose. Depending on how involved you and your coach are, using one can dramatically increase your chances of getting published.

Here are three reasons why you might want to find a writing coach:

A Writing Coach Can Show You the Ropes

Your writing coach should be a person who is already published, ideally in a similar genre/field as you want to be in. The writing coach can help share the process she went through toward getting published in that industry. She will share tips about what editors are looking for, inconsistencies in your writing, trends in the industry, and much more.

A Writing Coach Can Help You Improve

You probably don’t think your work is the best thing ever, but sometimes an outside prospective is exactly what you need to get past any blocks in your writing. A third party can see issues with your writing and stories that you cannot and help you find a better way to say what you are trying to say. Some coaches may even help edit your work, depending on how much you are willing to pay them.

A Writing Coach Can Help Get Your Work in Front of the Right People

A person who has been published is an invaluable resource. This person knows how to get something published and who needs to see your work before it can start its way onto the publishing process. A writing coach can help you find an agent, publisher, editor, and even a PR team, when you are finally able to become published.

If you plan on becoming a published writer one day, a writing coach will be your best friend.
