{Monday Morning Madness} - Book Blogger Hop, Reviews, and The Midnight Horror

How is everyone doing on this rainy Monday? Yes, I said rainy! If you live in the midwest, like me, you know it has been a rainy summer. I planned on mowing the yard today, but that's not going to be happening. It rained just enough in the early morning hours to ruin my day. According to the local news, Tuesday will be cloud-free with warmer temperatures. Guess what I'll be doing tomorrow? Lol!

Sunday Post: 8/4/19

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @  Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Afternoon, Everyone!

What Am I Currently Reading?

Yes, I'm still reading Stephen King's IT and one of these days I'm actually going to finish reading it. I had to put IT on the back burner because I had to read two other ARC titles - Underestimating Miss Cecilia and The Maine Nemesis. The review for Underestimating Miss Cecilia was posted early this morning and the review for The Maine Nemesis will be posted sometime tomorrow.

On the reading agenda this week is the Scary Stories To Tell in The Dark trilogy. If you don't already know, the feature film based on the first book will be released to theatres on August 9th. I read all three titles during my childhood and I'm going to start rereading them tomorrow. I'll be posting reviews for them later in the week. After I finish reading the trilogy, I'll refocus my full attention on finishing IT, which I'm planning on posting a review for the massive novel next month near the release date of the IT: Chapter 2 movie.

Books

It's always nice to get a surprise book in the mailbox and that's exactly what happened to me last week when I received the Ripley's Believe It or Not!: Beyond The Bizarre! (16th Annual) from Ripley's Publishing. Plus, they sent me the 100 Years Of Ripley's Believe It or Not!: Official Anniversary Edition magazine.

DVDs/Blu-rays

I need to get caught up on DVDs and Blu-rays as I have a pile of them on my desk that needs to be reviewed. Yesterday, I received another package from Mill Creek Entertainment. The DVDs titles are: Pan Am: The Complete Series and Dead Don't Die in Dallas. The Blu-ray titles are: The New Kids, White Line Fever, and Roxanne. I've already watched Dead Don't Die in Dallas so keep an eye out on my review for it. It'll be posted as a Midnight Horror Review either on Monday or Tuesday next Sunday. Since there's nothing on TV tonight I might watch The New Kids.

Sunday Post / It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @  Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by The Book Date.

Good Morning, Everyone!

How was everyone's 4th of July?

I'm not into fireworks, so I spent the 4th watching the third season of Stranger Things on Netflix. Plus, my town had their fireworks event on June 28th.

It wasn't a great week for me. The central air (a.k.a. the air conditioning) kept shutting itself off every 20 seconds on Monday night, so a repairman had to come in on Tuesday afternoon to fix it. Let's just say it was really hot in the house by the time he showed up. The good news is that the broken part only cost $10, but with labor it was over $100. At least the central air unit didn't have to be replaced, unlike what happened with the hot water heater the previous week.

I guess bad luck comes in threes!

The washing machine drainage pipe goes through the bottom of the east wall, turns into the garage, and eventually turns again and goes in between the two concrete blocks that the hot water heater sits on. Then it goes straight down into the garage floor. Thanks to the hot water that leaked out of the old water heater last week, the seal for the PVC slip union that connects two of the pipes together had broke; which basically means when the washing machine drains the water leaks from the where the two pipes are connected. Luckily, I do know a thing or two about plumbing, so I was able to fix it myself.

FYI: My sore throat was gone by my midweek, but I currently have three canker sores! Yay, me!

What Am I Currently Reading?

I flew through Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. I'll post a review for it sometime this week. I took a short break from reading on the 4th to watch the new season of Stranger Things. My next read will be 1,000+ horror epic "IT" by Stephen King. I've owned an IT paperback for many years but I've never gotten up the nerve to read it. The 1989 miniseries scared me to death when I was a kid and I never got the courage to watch the second part of it until I was a teenager. I had rewatched the miniseries a couple of years ago and it's not as scary as I remember it to be. And, of course, I've seen the 2018's IT movie. This will be the first time I have read IT. I'm in a horror mood as of late, so it might not take me too long to read the novel.

New Blog

Speaking of horror, I made decision to give my post series "Midnight Horror Review" its very own blog  https://midnighthorrorreview.blogspot.com/. I'm not for sure if I'll get a domain for it. Currently, I'm posting snippets of the original Midnight Horror Review's posts from this blog, so I'll have enough content for about three weeks. The blog doesn't have any followers yet!

UPDATE:
I've decided to delete the new blog because maintaining one blog is enough "work" for one person. Therefore, I'll just continue posting Midnight Horror Review posts right here on this blog.

Midnight Horror Review: Hell Fest

AMAZON

Yes, I'm well aware it's way past midnight, but since it has been a few weeks since I've reviewed a horror movie I thought I would go ahead and post this review as a Midnight Horror Review post; though technically I did watch a horror movie at around midnight.

The horror flick that I'd watched was the 2018 slasher Hell Fest, which just arrived on Blu-ray this week from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. It's also available on 4K Ulta HD, DVD, and Digital for those of you who need to know that bit of information. The only special feature is the 16-minute "Thrills and Kills: Making Hell Fest" and the Theatrical Trailer.

Directed by Gregory Plotkin, the film stars Amy Forsyth, Reign Edwards, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Matt Mercurio, Roby Attal, Stephen Conroy, and Tony Todd.

Hell Fest centers on a group of friends (Natalie, Brooke, Taylor, Asher, and Gavin) going to a horror-themed Halloween event at an amusement park, which is filled with games, mazes, and rides. This is the type of place were the workers (and probably a few volunteers) are dressed as zombies, ghosts, creatures, etc., anything that would scare someone to death. Everyone is having a blast except for Natalie, who believes a masked stranger "The Other" is stalking her.

Like all slashers go, one by one "The Other" preys on each teen in the group and he leaves a few other dead bodies in his path of destruction.

Amy Forsyth ("Natalie", left) and Reign Edwards ("Brooke", right) star in HELL FEST.
Bex Taylor-Klaus ("Taylor") stars in HELL FEST.

Midnight Horror Review: #FromJennifer

Welcome midnighters and horror lovers to my Midnight Horror Review.

AMAZON
On a rare occasion I will receive a product, book, or even a movie out of the blue; something that I had never requested to review. Back in the spring of 2017, I had received three horror DVDs from Sector 5 Films, which one of those titles happened to #FromJennifer. Out of the three, this horror comedy is the only one that I had actually watched at the time, but I never got around to writing the review for it. The envelope which contained these DVDs got lost, well, until I stumbled upon while cleaning last week.

Produced, written, and directed by Frank Merle, #FromJennifer (80 minutes) stars Danielle Taddei, Tony Todd, Derek Mears, Aaron Abrams, and Meghan Deanna Smith.

The film centers around Jennifer Peterson (played by Danielle Taddei), a struggling actress who was recently fired from a horror film. Her manager (played by Tony Todd) suggests she should start a video blog to gain some fans and maybe even get the attention of a few producers and directors.

Shortly after uploading her first vlog to the world, her manager dumps her because of a rumored sex tape, which was released by her ex-boyfriend. Feeling humiliated and betrayed, Jennifer sets out to make a "'Revenge Porn Revenge" video, which she gets a bit of help from her new assistant, Butch (played by Derek Mears), a clueless idiot who is very loyal to her cause.

Final Thoughts

I guess technically #FromJennifer is third the installment in Section 5 Films' Jennifer series, which started with To Jennifer in 2013 and followed by 2 Jennifer in 2016. #From Jennifer is standalone film and is only connected to the other films by name, which is a good thing as those films sucked!

Despite it's low budget, questionable acting, and silly plot, #FromJennifer is somewhat entertaining at times. While there isn't much horror in the film, there's plenty of blood to go around. Derek Mears as the doofus sidekick is the best part of the movie. Horror legend Tony Todd is in it for only a few minutes as Jennifer's manager.

Overall, #FromJennifer is a surprisingly likeable horror comedy. If you don't expect too much from the film, you might actually enjoy watching it.

*Note - I received a review copy from the studio.
All opinion are my own.

The Midnight Horror Review - We Summon the Darkness (2019)

For a while now, I've been wanting to bring back The Midnight Horror Review and make it a weekly event, but I've been debating with myself whether to host it on here or start a Tumblr blog. I almost went with the latter, and I even set everything up, but thanks to my Twitter poll, I stayed where I am.

Midnight Horror Review: Apocalypse: 4 in 1 Collection

Mill Creek Entertainment; Amazon
Yes, I know it's been awhile since my last Midnight Horror Review, but between putting my grandmother in a nursing home, moving her belongings into a storage unit, and dealing with a flu/ cold bug, I haven't had a lot to time to watch any horror flicks until a few nights ago when I binged watched the Apocalypse: 4 in 1 Collection DVD (Not Rated; $19.98; 5 hrs 49 mins), which will be released on April 16th by Mill Creek Entertainment. The two-disc set features four made-for-SyFy television movies: Arachnoquake, Ghostquake, Miami Magma, and Weather Wars. There are no special features or bonus extras.

Let's start with the best first and work my way down to the worst that this release has to offer!

Arachnoquake first aired on SyFy in 2012. It's a B-spider flick from director G.E. Furst, who also serves as supervising producer for the other three titles on this release. Plus, Furst also acts in the movies as well. Ignore Arachnoquake's 2.9 rating on IMDb as the movie isn't that bad. It stars Bug Hall, Tracey Gold, Edward Furlong, Dane Rhodes, and Ethan Phillips. The plot centers around a dangerous species of giant fire-breathing spiders being unleashed after several earthquakes occur in New Orleans. An alcoholic tour guide ends up leading a group of tourists in a quest to kill the "queen" spider, who basically controls the life of all the other spiders.

Ghostquake aired on SyFy in 2012 under the title Haunted High. Jeffery Scott Lando directed this horror-comedy, which stars M.C. Gainey, Lauren Whitney Pennington, Jonathan Baron, Mark Donato, Shawn Phillips, and Danny Trejo. Charisma Carpenter has a cameo as a librarian. The plot centers around a time capsule at a private high school being knocked open, which releases the ghosts of a cult leader, Danforth, and his female assistant. Danforth unleashes a series of supernatural earthquakes that traps several students and teachers inside the school.

Weather Wars aired on SyFy in 2011 under the title Storm War. Directed by Todor Chapkanov, the disaster flick stars Jason London, Wes Brown, Erin Cahill, and Stacy Keach. The plot is ridiculously dumb! It involves a recently fired scientist seeking revenge on the government by unleashing a series of dangerous lighting strikes across Washington D.C. Only two people in the entire city who can stop him are his estranged sons!

Miami Magma aired on SyFy in 2011. Directed by Todor Chapkanov, this boring disaster flick stars Rachel Hunter, Cleavant Derricks, Melissa Ordway, Griff Furst, and Brad Dourif (more like a cameo). Thanks to an oil company that's been illegally drilling, a super-volcano erupts underneath Miami. Vulcanologist Antoinette Vitrini (played by Rachel Hunter) and her much younger sister attempt to expose the oil company.

The Midnight Horror Review - Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter (1974)

The Midnight Horror Review is back! Well, I didn’t really go anywhere. Because of an internet outage, I couldn’t post last week’s review. Yeah, it sucked.

I had planned on reviewing a different movie, but Hulu included Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter in their fresh batch of titles. I can never say no to watching a Hammer flick, so that’s what I’m reviewing tonight - 1974’s B-Movie - Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter.

Sunday Post - Blood Hollow, Star Trek, and We Summon the Darkness

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

Is it just me or did last week fly by way too fast? Between the scorching temperatures, way too much rain, Twitter stupidity, news media lies, and riots, the week has been a blast. Add in my 72-hour flu, I've been peachy! And, no, I don't have the coronavirus. Instead, I had the head-in-the-toilet virus.

After a lengthy debate with myself, I have brought back The Midnight Horror Review, which I will post every Saturday night at 11:59 PM. It didn't exactly pan out last night because of technical issues; though the first recent post got published later.

FYI: It should be mandatory to pass an IQ test before being allowed to have a Twitter account. There are way too many people in this world that have no common sense. They let whatever is "trending" take over their brains, instead of thinking for themselves. It's sad!

Monday Morning Madness: Decaf for the Dead and Paperbacks From Hell

Good Afternoon, Everyone!

Yes, I'm well aware it's way past noon. Originally, I wanted to have this post published earlier but I got distracted by several other things. Once again, I'm combining this week's Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Reviewer) with today's It's Monday! What Are You Reading (hosted by The Book Date).

What Am I Currently Reading?

Tomorrow, I'll be reading Decaf for the Dead by Sandy Lo, who nicely sent me a review copy. I posted an interview with Sandy Lo on Saturday, which you can read right here!

Last week, was  a reread week for me with The Shining and Doctor Sleep. I'll probably be writing reviews for them sometime later in the week. I never got around to reading Rise of the Gorgon by Galen Surlak-Ramsey so it'll probably be next read after Decaf for the Dead. Then I'm going to start reading the books I have lined up for this year's Holiday Gift Guide.

Midnight Horror Review: Final Exam (1981)

Yes, I'm back with another Midnight Horror Review, which I had originally planned to post weekly. However, due to a recent family emergency, I just didn't have time to watch a horror flick last week. Nevertheless, I'm back tonight to review the 1981 slasher film Final Exam.

Written and directed by Jimmy Huston, the film is set in a college campus during "finals" week. The campus nerd Radish (played by Joel S. Rice) has heard tales of students being murdered in nearby colleges and he's now a little paranoid! After witnessing a shooting and kidnapping on campus, Radish calls the authorities. Unfortunately, the whole "event" was faked by a fraternity, leaving the sheriff (played by Sam Kilman) to believe Radish is nothing but a joke. Later, when Radish reports a killer on the campus, nobody wants to believe him.

Meanwhile, Courtney (played by Cecile Bagdadi) is spending most of her free time studying for the "big exam", while her roommate Lisa (played by DeAnna Robbins) is way too busy trying to seduce her professor. Unknowingly to them, there is a real killer loose on the campus, who has targeted them for his next victims.

Well, there were a few scares this week beginning with a EF4 tornado that tragically hit Kansas and then touched down in a neighboring county here in Missouri. The tornado sirens were a blazing in my town nearly ten minutes after the tornado warning was issued by the National Weather Service. Yeah, I believe my town has a communication problem! Luckily, the storm skipped over my town. It didn't even rain!

The second scare came yesterday when my mother found my grandmother unresponsive at the nursing home. She called for a nurse, who believed my grandmother had a stroke.

It turns out my grandmother did have a very light stroke and she was life-flighted to St. Luke's Hospital in the city. She's recovering just fine; talking and acting like her normal self. She's expected to be released from the hospital sometime today.

Update: My grandmother hasn't been released from the hospital yet. The doctors ran a few more tests on her yesterday. They're trying to figure out why she had the stroke.

What Am I Currently Reading?

No, you're not seeing déjà vu! And, yes, I've already featured A Justified Murder by Jude Deveraux on this blog several weeks ago, but I got slightly distracted and I had to put the book aside for a bit. Since I've finally finished reading NOS4A2, I now have time to read A Justified Murder, which I'm going to pick up exactly where I stopped on page 35.

Sunday Post: 10/20/19

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

What Am I Currently Reading?

It's going to be a really busy week full of reading for me. My plans for last week was to stay a few days ahead of my reviews but, sadly, that didn't happen. So, my plan for this week is to a read a horror book in the early morning hours and post a review for it in the afternoon (if not sooner) per day for my 13 Reads of Horror event that started yesterday with Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin.

The horror titles I will be reading/ reviewing are: The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker; Psycho by Robert Bloch; Psycho II by Robert Bloch; Psycho House by Robert Bloch; The Other by Thomas Tryon; Ravensridge by Jennifer Hale; and The Place by T.M. Wright.

(FYI: I'm writing this post on Saturday night. I'll be reading The Hellbound Heart on Sunday morning, so there's a good chance I've already read the book by the time everyone is reading this post.)

Additionally, I'll be reading/reviewing A Cross To Kill by Andrew Huff sometime this week for a blog tour.

What's In The Mail?

I received two new Blu-rays last week to review - 3 From Hell and The Lion King. 3 From Hell is the third installment in Rob Zombie's "Firefly" series. The Lion King is the CGI live-action remake of the classic animated movie. I haven't had time to watch the latter yet but I will be doing so sometime today as I need to have my review posted by Tuesday.

What New on the Bookshelf?

In last week's Sunday Post, I had complained about my local Walmart not stocking books. Well, guess what? The book department was actually stocked this week with newer books, including Dog Diaries: Happy Howlidays! by James Patterson and Steven Butler. This is one Patterson title that slipped right by my radar as I had no clue it was being released until I accidentally came across it. I had went in the store on Tuesday night to quickly get a few things and I just happened to push the shopping cart by the end of the book section. Then I came to a complete stop because eyes got a glimpse of what looked like a "James Patterson" title. I backed up and Voilà, I was right! Since it's a Christmas-themed book, I'll either read it in November or December.

I stopped by the local thrift store today (Saturday) with little expectations of actually finding anything worth wild but lo and behold, I actually found several books. The first two paperbacks I grabbed were Carson of Venus and Escape of Venus by Edgar Rice Burroughs (author Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars), which are 3 & 4 of The Venus Series. Then I moved over to the other side of the book area where there were three bookshelves full of titles. It was there I found the hardcover The Midnight Palace by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, which is a 2011 YA dark mystery. I'm not familiar with the author but the cover art caught my attention. Next, I found two paperbacks: Planet Of Judgement by Joe Haldeman and The Puppet Masters by Robert A. Heinlein. Planet Of Judgment is a 1977 Star Trek novel. The Puppet Masters was first published in 1951 and was adapted into a movie in 1994 starring Donald Sutherland. Before I left the store, I ended up browsing the bookshelf where I found the Venus books and I found book 2, Lost On Venus

Now I've never read the Venus books but I'm aware they're science fiction pulp novels that were written in the 1930s. I'm very interested in reading the books this winter, which lead me to buy the eBooks of Pirates of Venus (book 1) and The Wizard of Venus (book 5) for $.99 each.

Speaking of eBooks, I recently received "Short Horror Stories: Vol. 1" from Team Scare Street, which I'm hoping to review as soon as I can. Maybe not this week but soon! Also, I just purchased two $1.99 titles on my Kindle - Raylan Goes To Detroit by Peter Leonard and The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty.

As you can see by the photo, I'm still reading N024A2 by Joe Hill, which I had to rechecked out at my local library just a few days ago. I'm currently on page 477 (a.k.a. 60% read according to Goodreads). I would like to finish the book by Tuesday!! The AMC television series based on the book starts June 2nd!!!

What Am I Reading?

My broken record continues...

After many delays, I have officially started reading Hawk. Currently, I am on chapter 19 out of 112 and two epilogues. Now, I don't mind a book having short chapters, but 112 is overkill. I will admit Hawk is better written than the last few Maximum Ride sequels, but that probably has less to do with Mr. Patterson and more to do with his co-author, Gabrielle Charbonnet.

Next, I might read Hail to the Chins: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor by Bruce Campbell next, which is an autobiography I picked up at a Dollar Tree a few weeks ago.

Also, I will be reading Under A Full Moon by Alice Kay Hill for an upcoming book tour. It's a true story about the last lynching in Kansas.

The Midnight Horror Review - Tremors: Shrieker Island (2020)

It seems it has been forever since my last Midnight Horror Review. As you can see by the post title, I am reviewing Tremors: Shrieker Island, which Universal Pictures Home Entertainment released to Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital on October 20, 2020. I received a digital screener before the film's release date, and I did watch it immediately, but I haven't had time to write the review until tonight.
