It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by The Book Date.

Good Afternoon, Morning!

Wow! I'm actually going to get my Sunday Post posted actually on a Sunday morning for once! For now on, I'm going to include this post as my It's Monday! What Are You Reading? weekly post as well.

Besides for having a sore throat and a head cold, I'm doing alright this morning. My insomnia issue still comes and goes each week, though if I read a printed book for an hour or so before bedtime, I am able to fall asleep.

Here's a little update on my grandmother. Her doctor put her on some kind of medicine (I don't know what it's called.) for dementia and she seems to be back to her normal self. However, there were a few incidents where she got up from bed by herself without using the call button. She's upset with the nurses because they told her she needs to be more "responsible" and use the call button. My mom has had a conversation about her staying in the nursing home. If her walking improves in six-months, a year, or more, then maybe she can live on her own again. Until then, we've gotten rid of her phone and cable services in her apartment. We're looking into getting a storage unit, so we can move all of her belongings out of her apartment next month. Once her insurance will no longer pay for her stay at the nursing home, then she'll move in permanently. Then we can figure out what furniture can fit into her room. Just in case she can live on her own in the near future, we're going to keep all of her other stuff in storage.

Also, we had to buy her another cell phone. We've gotten her two pre-paid cells in the last two years and she never could figure out how to use them. This time, I purchased a cheap flip-phone at a Dollar General Store, as I didn't believe she would actually use it. To my surprise, she has used the phone three times this week. The only problem is that we'll have to buy more minutes for her phone, though "other relatives" claim they will send her money for it. We'll have to see what happens.

What Am I Currently Reading?

I pushed myself to finish reading Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin, which was 700+ pages. You can find my review link for it down below in this post. Yesterday, I finished reading The Silhouette Girl by V.C. Andrews (a.k.a. - the ghostwriter). I'll be writing my review for it sometime today and it'll be posted tomorrow.

I have my bookmark placed inside the massive science fiction/horror novel The Passage and I'll be begin reading it today. Additionally, I've already been reading the anthology Flight or Fright: 17 Turbulent Tales. I guess you can say I'm going to be multitask-reading (Is that a word?) this week, as I'm also going to read the eBook The Curse of Misty Wayfair by Jamie Jo Wright.

In the Mail

There were no new review copies in the mail last week. The only the books I did receive were The House Next Door and Liar Liar both co-written by James Patterson, which I had to order from Amazon because my local Walmart hasn't updated their book section this year. I'm hoping to get to these book either in late February or early March.

Library Finds

When I took Fire & Blood back to the library, I did look to see if they had the new James Patterson's books, but they didn't have them. Actually, as far as I can tell, the library hasn't received new books for since November. Weird!

Anyhow, I ended up checking out four books: Flight or Fright: 17 Turbulent Tales edited by Stephen King and Bev Vincent, The Twelve by Justin Crown, and The City of Mirrors by Justin Crown, which the latter two are sequels to The Passage. The books are due back Feb. 21st. I've already read several stories in Flight or Fright.

New On My Bookshelf

Besides from thrift stores, the best place to find cheap books is Dollar Tree Last week, I found the novella Father Gaetano's Puppet Catechism by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden. I couldn't pass up a $1 book, so of course I purchased it. The plot involves evil puppets during WWII, which reminds me of the Puppet Master horror films.

New on my Kindle is Friends to the End and The Patient One, both written by Shelley Shepard Gray.

  1. I'm a bit curious about The PAssage with the new show out based on it now. And I agree about Fire and Blood after reading your review- it definitely is slow in parts. Glad you mostly enjoyed it though! I'm getting pretty excited for the show.

Good luck with your grandmother's situation. I hope it all goes well. I went through something similar a couple years ago when my mother had surgery and had to have an extended rehab/ nursing home stay. Luckily it all went well but it was tough at the time.

    1. I like The Passage television series, but it probably won't last long since it's on Fox. I'm excited about reading the book, which I believe the story was watered-down for the TV series.

I'm also excited about the final season of Game of Thrones! I wonder if George R.R. Martin will ever finish writing the final two books. Overall, I liked Fire & Blood, though it was a little slow.

I'm hoping my grandmother will get better, if she listens to the doctor and the nurses. However, she is very stubborn and only wants do what she believes is good for her.

  2. I'm glad your grandmother is doing a little better. It's hard having to make the adjustment from independent living to a care home but if it's the best thing for her... She'll settle in quickly I'm sure.

I hope you kick the cold soon and have a good week Billy!

    1. My grandmother understands why she is there. Since she's been on her new meds, she's back to her old self mentally. If she would just listen to the therapists, nurses, and doctors, she might be able to recover and walk better. Then maybe she can live on her own again. Plus, she needs to get an eye doctor appointment. Last year, the eye doctor recommended that she should have eye surgery, but she refused. We've had to cancel her yearly checkup twice last year. Once she was sick and the other time the weather was bad.

  3. Of course multitask-reading is a word. I do it all the time, a paperback I read in a hot bath, a book of whatever format I tote around with me on errands (my "errand book"), and an ebook I read on the sofa.

I hope your sore throat and head cold go away soon!

  4. I hope you feel better.

Sorry to hear about your Grandmother. I hope the medicine helps her so she can come home with you all. It took my grandmother a few months to get used to the nursing home she was in. After a while they get used to it. It's just hard.

I want to watch the passage but waiting for it to be completely over and on netflix. I am not sure I could read the book. A friend said it had it's moments and thought I might not like it so I think for this one time ever, I will watch the show instead.

I hope this week is awesome for you Billy! Happy Reading!

    1. If my grandmother is ever able to leave the nursing home, she'll probably want her own place again and we can get help her get home health/housekeeping for her.

I highly doubt The Passage will be on Netflix. It airs on Fox, so I'm guessing it will be on Hulu. Fox owns Hulu and now Disney owns Fox! The series is a little slow, and I'm guessing the book is completely different. I can't really judge a TV series by just two episodes, especially when the story is continued each week. I'll have to see how the whole season plays out.

  5. I hope your grandma adjusts to the nursing home soon and that she's eventually able to live on her own again.

  6. I hope you feel better soon! I’m glad that your grandmother’s medication is working. My grandma died a few months ago, but she was a monster to hospital and nursing home staff. She wouldn’t listen to them at all. Hopefully your grandma adjusts to her new home quickly. Have a good week!

  7. I hope you are feeling better! I am also glad that your grandmother is doing a bit better and the medication is working. I hope she is able to live on her own again. I had to get my grandparents flip phones as well. They still have a bit of trouble with them but they've been able to use them so that's something.

Of course, multitask-reading is a word or at least it's something I do. I tend to listen to an audiobook, a physical book and an ebook at the same time.

    1. The previous phone I had gotten my grandmother was a flip phone too, but she couldn't figure out how to use it. I believe her new meds is the only reason why she knows how to use her new phone.

Multitask-reading is my new favorite hobby.

  9. Insomnia can be a real curse, reading quietly before bed can help, but I feel for everyone that struggles wit it. Aging is never easy, your grandmother and family must both be finding it difficult.

    1. Yep! Insomnia is curse! The only good thing from having it is that I had some free time for reading.

  10. I have bouts of insomnia too. I'm angry on behalf of you and your grandmother. Scolding does nothing positive for patients with dementia except make everyone frustrated. It takes a lot of gentle reminding to build a new habit. Take care! My weekly updates

    1. I don't believe the nurses were scolding her. They're just trying to get her to use the call button. She's seems to be doing better. I didn't visit my grandma today, but mom told me she got a perm today. From my understanding someone comes in once a week at the nursing home and gives haircuts, perms, etc..

I believe my aunt is attempting to back out of paying for the storage unit for my grandmother's belongs, as she texted my mother that maybe everyone can pay a little bit of the monthly payment. Well, that's not going to happened. I have other relatives who will do nothing to help my grandmother. We have to have her things removed from her apartment by the end of February; though their will be some room for her stuff in her room at the nursing home.

The nursing home will take most my grandmother's income, leaving her with only $50 a month! Minus $20 for the cable that they offer, she's going to only have $30. The area where the cable outlet is located is very small, so I'm going to have to measure it to see what size TV can fit there. The TV in her apartment is over 40inches, so I know it won't fit.

  11. I hope you feel better soon. My Mom (91) fractured her hip last week and had surgery last Thursday. So she's in a nursing home for physical therapy for about the next month. Apparently yesterday she had all her bags packed and wanted to go home. My brother can talk her into anything so he called and talked her down. I'm surprised it took almost a week. She's doing really great with the PT though. She's been living on her own and still passed her driver's test last summer. She's a tough one. I hope you are able to work out everything for your grandmother. Anne - Books of My Heart
