Review:

Before the eleventh book from the popular House of Night series is released this fall, get caught up on all the drama with the today's paperback release of book nine, Destined. St. Martin's Griffin was nice enough to send me a free copy in exchange for my honest review.

Despite being the ninth installment, Destined flows more like a stand-alone spin-off, where Aurox and Neferet are summoned by the white bull, but Neferet come up with a plan for Aurox to kill the white bull, so she can become the one and only Goddess of Vampyres.

The heroine, seventeen-year-old Zoey Redbird, is struggling with the possible death of her mother, while at the same time she stumbles upon Neferet's plan to take control of the Houses, who has returned to the House despite her previous evil actions. Neferet awkwardly accepts Rephaim (who has been granted the gift of humanity, so he can be with the love of his life, Stevie Rae) at the House of Night. Aurox isn't too far behind, causing chaos in the Houses. Zoey and her friends have their hands full as they try to stop Neferet's evil plans.

Review:

The third A House of Night novella focuses on Neferet's past life in the year 1893 before she was Marked. She was born as Emily Wheiler and at the age on sixteen-years-old she became the Lady of Wheiler House after her mother passed away. She doesn't have much time to mourn as her father, a powerful bank president, demands that she take over late mother's responsibilities, such as planning parties, approving of the dinner menus, being a good hostess and running the household.

She accepts herself as her mother's replacements and hopes that she would become closer to her somewhat estranged father, but she soon realizes that any type of relationship with her father would never happen. At times Emily attempts to hang out with her childhood friends, but her father objects to childish ways. He won't even let her ride her bicycle, which he demands to have remove from the property.

Unexpectedly, she falls in love with a young man that she meets at one of her father's parties, but her father once again objects to her having any type of a life, he even becomes violent. Situations occur that leads her to becoming Marked by a vampyre. She leaves the Wheiler House and is brought to the Chicago House of Night where her destiny as Neferet begins.

13 Days of Halloween: Tombstones: The Last Drop

Tombstones: The Last Drop
By John Peel
Publisher: Archway Publisher
ISBN: 978-0671535308
Pub. Date: December 1, 2005
Pages: 160

Review:

During the late 1980s to the middle 1990s, the horror genre was very popular in the middle grade and young adult market, many thanks to Point Horror, but there where other publishers that released horror books as well. Archway Paperbacks tried to release a new series titled "Tombstones", but only two books were brought out in 1995.

Jared Irving is determined to find out if the Full Moon Enterprises is dumping toxins into the local streams in Tombstones: The Last Drop. The Full Moon Enterprises is breaking federal laws by using deadly chemicals, but the town people seem to ignore it, or they just don't want to believe it as the company has brought in many new jobs for the area.

While getting samples at a nearby stream, Jared meets a creature of the night and it will be the last thing that he will ever see.

Review:

The 10th installment in A House of Night series picks up where Destined ended, with the High Council finally finding out that the High Priestess Neferet is nothing but pure evil. Neferet has broken all ties with the Tulsa's House of Night. This of course takes a lot of weight off Zoey Redbird's shoulders, who already has enough problems to deal with. Neferet wastes no time with her schemes and she sets fire to school's stables. Two innocent felines die in the fire. Or were they killed by someone else?

Lenobia barely has time to mourn for Dragon's losses as she keeps seeing her lover Martin (whom died many, many years ago and appeared in Lenobia's Vow) in her dreams. Or are these signs? She starts to suspect that her new horse-keeper, Travis, (who was hired by Neferet) may possibly be Martin reincarnated.

Things couldn't get any worse. Right? Think again!

Review:

I've been a vampire fan since I can remember, watching movies and reading books from the genre, so I eagerly read through The Vampire Hunter's Daughter in one night, courtesy of Bewitching Blog Tours.

The book opens up with a fourteen-year-old Chloe Kallistrate being awakened by her distraught mother in the early morning, telling her to hide in the closet as they are coming for her. Who is coming for her? Blood-sucking vampires of course!

Blurb:

If your home was the last safe place on earth, would you let a stranger in?

In this captivating thriller, an Amish settlement is the last safe haven in a world plagued by an unspeakable horror…

Katie is on the verge of her Rumspringa, the time in Amish life when teenagers are free to experience non-Amish culture before officially joining the church. But before Rumspringa arrives, Katie’s safe world starts to crumble. It begins with a fiery helicopter crash in the cornfields, followed by rumors of massive unrest and the disappearance of huge numbers of people all over the world. Something is out there...and it is making a killing.

Unsure why they haven’t yet been attacked, the Amish Elders make a decree: No one goes outside their community, and no one is allowed in. But when Katie finds a gravely injured young man lying just outside the boundary of their land, she can’t leave him to die. She refuses to submit to the Elder’s rule and secretly brings the stranger into her community—but what else is she bringing in with him?

Review:

I've been an Amish fiction fan for several years every since I read my first Beverly Lewis book. I'm also a fan of vampire novels, like the Vampire Diaries and The Southern Vampire Mysteries. In The Hallowed Ones I get a combination of Amish fiction and vampires!

Abe learns that vampires own slaves and  they use them not as workers, but as meals. He is horrified of this and realizes that there is only one way to get rid of vampires - starve them by ending slavery.

Review & Giveaway - Helens-of-Troy

Gilmore Girls with Bite!

Helen Bocelli, along with her Goth daughter Ellie, packs up their stuff and heads back home to live with her mother, Helena, in a small town called Troy after leaving her husband. In addition, there is a great welcoming gift for the two - a dead body on the porch on Halloween Night. The site of the dead man does not spook Ellie, but she is more interested in the local boys who live nearby.

Ellie has a strange dream of a young girl and is shocked to learn the next day that a local girl is missing. Ellie is not like other teenage girls as she knows what goes bump in the night, and in this case, it is a bloodsucking vampire.

When I read that this book was Gilmore Girls meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I had to review it as I have been watching the Gilmore reruns and I grew up watching Buffy. The three female characters are completely different from the Gilmores, but the quirky fast-paced dialogue is similar. The grandmother Helena is like no grandma I have every seen. She dresses and acts like a woman thirty years younger than her. I thought it was funny how the teenager Ryan was after her. The mother Helen has almost given up on her life and finding love. Now Ellie does remind of Rory Gilmore, except she dresses in Goth and has some supernatural elements to her. Ellie is smart, speaks her mind, and is more mature than most teenagers are.

Book Review - Night of the Vampires

Set during the Civil War, dead soldiers are coming back to life, but not as humans. They are now vampires. Because of the chaos of the war, the vampires are using this to their advantage. They are feeding upon the innocent citizens of the United States.

There is a secret group of soldiers lead by Cole Granger that fights the creatures of the night. Along with him is Cody Fox, a half-vampire, soldier. During a bloody battle, they come across a young woman, Megan Fox. She claims to be Cody’s half-sister. They try to work together to stop the undead from feeding.

I didn’t realize that Night of the Vampires was set during the Civil War. By the cover I would say it was during modern times. The main female character is named Megan Fox. I laughed out loud when I read this, thinking of the actress. I have a few paperbacks somewhere of Heather Graham that I haven’t gotten around to reading. I like the idea of vampires during the Civil War, but there times that I thought the author was telling instead of showing. At times the dialogue is a bit cheesy and unrealistic for the time-period. But for some odd reason, I still liked the book. I think the author meant for this to be a realistic novel, but I can easily see this being turned into a horror-comedy feature film. If you like reading about vampires, then I recommend you checking this out.

In this sequel to Jane Bites Back, the vampire Jane Austen continues to live her life under the name Jane Fairfax. She is running a book store and her new novel Constance is a bestseller. The book is being made into a movie.

Jane’s life sounds great, but she does have her problems. Her boyfriend’s, Walter, mother is in town and thinks Jane is Jewish. Her new editor is a handful, and a Hollywood camera crew follow her round for the extras on the soon to be filmed Constance DVD. And there is a little situation with a bloodsucking Bronte sister.

I have never read the first book, but found it easy to jump into Jane Goes Batty. If you are a vampire fan, you will enjoy reading about the undead Jane Austen. The novel is fast paced and fun to read.
