Review:

One of my favorite children book authors is Judy Blume. I recall reading the "Fudge" books during my elementary years as well as a few of her young adult novels. As I grew up, I continued to read her adult novels as well and even her later kids books, Double Fudge and the Pain and the Great One sequels.

Awhile back, I was sent a copy of Judy Blume's newest work - In the Unlikely Event. Honestly, I had no clue what the novel was about until I started reading it. I meant to have this review posted by the release date, but a few things came up and fell behind on a few reviews. Nevertheless, I reread the novel over the weekend to refresh my mind before I began writing this review.

In the Unlikely Event starts out with Miri Ammerman heading back to her hometown of Elizabeth, New Jersey to attend the commemoration of the three deadly plane crashes that took place during the winter of 1951-1952. Then books heads back in time thirty-five years when Miri was fifteen-years-old, living with her single-mother, uncle and grandmother during the holiday season of 1951.

The book chronicles Mira, her family and her teenage friends as they struggle to understand why the three planes over the course of three months fell from the sky and wrecked havoc over their community.

By just looking at the book jacket, I was expecting this to be like Tiger Eyes, but I was completely wrong as the novel is an adult fiction set around real events that just happens to involve teenage characters. While I have to admit that I was slightly disappointed at first with the plot, the more I read it, the more I liked it; though there were way too many side characters to keep up with and I didn't like the constant shift in point-of-views. Overall, In the Unlikely Event is an intriguing novel that I ended up liking. The book isn’t' for everyone, but it's a good read!
