Review:

Anne Rice is known for blood thirsty Vampire Chronicles novels and the bewitching Mayfair Witches, but she also wrote the Sleeping Beauty trilogy under the pseudonym A. N. Roquelaure. Now the trilogy wasn't a Disney fairy tale, as the author put an erotic twist to the story. It's been 30 years since the third book, Beauty's Release, was published and now Anne Rice has returned to her erotic BDSM world with the long awaited sequel Beauty's Kingdom.

Beauty's Kingdom takes place 20 years after the trilogy. Queen Eleanor is presumed dead, leaving Beauty and her prince, Laurent, to take control of the kingdom. Beauty's plan is to continue the same sensual surrender that made Queen Eleanor's reign a legend, but with a slight twist - all erotic servitude must be voluntary only.

While the new kingdom's rules might be shocking to some, others (princes, princesses, lords, etc.) travel across the lands to witness and participate in the erotic paradise.

I have to admit that I"m not a fan of the erotic genre. As a teen I was introduced to the Vampire Chronicles series, so naturally I took an interests in reading other novels by the author, which lead me to read The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty (which I would never recommend to a teenager). It was a little to graphic for my taste. However, I reread the book about ten years later and though my tastes for the genre still hadn't changed, I did have more of an open mind the second time around, so I ended checking out books 2 & 3 at my local library.

I wasn't aware the author had written a fourth installment until I saw it listed on Barnes & Noble last month. Luckily for me, the publisher kindly sent me a review copy a few weeks ago. Now in her seventies, Anne Rice's writing has matured, resulting in a better written sequel than what could have been if it was written in the late 80s'. The book is definitely not for everyone due to the dark sexual themes. Overall, Beauty’s Kingdom is an excellent installment (final?) in the series. Like I already mentioned, I'm not a fan of the erotic genre, but thanks to author's writing skills, I  did enjoy reading about Beauty's Kingdom.
