Review:

Fairy tales have been making a comeback in recent years with success of Disney's Frozen, ABC's Once Upon a Time and a several other Grimm-themed fairy tales. Last year, the novel Doon put a modern twist on the fairy tale genre and now the authors, Carey Corp & Lorie Langdon, are back with the sequel, Destined For Doon.

The original Doon followed best-friends, Veronica and Mackenna (Kenna), whom arrived in Scotland for a vacation, but after stumbling up on a set of rings, they traveled to the land of Doon. Veronica ended up staying behind, but Kenna returned to our world to become a Broadway star.

In Destined For Doon, Kenna is regretting leaving her prince, Duncan, behind in Doon. A part of her wishes she had brought him to Chicago with her, but then the other part of her knows that he would have never adjusted to living in the modern world. Out of nowhere, Duncan appears in her dressing room and begs her to return to Doon with him as it seems that the new Queeen, Veronica, needs her help.

Veronica hasn't had the easiest time adjusting to being the new Queen of Doon as the people of the land haven't accepted her as their new leader. They see her as a powerless figure, especially when a new evil spreads across the kingdom and threatens her throne.

I'm not familiar with Brigadoon that inspired the Doon series, but I'm hooked into Veronica and Kenna's modern fairy story. They are both strong cliched-free female characters, something that is missing in many fantasy books today. The authors did a great job of crafting an intriguing fantasy with a bit of mystery and suspense. Overall, Destined For Doon is a fast-paced and entertaining sequel that I enjoyed reading.
