Review - Snow on Tulips by Liz Tolsma

It seems like there have been many WWII themed books being released, in which I have read several romance novels with a WWII background this year. Snow on the Tulips had an interesting cover, so I decided to sign up to review it. At first glance, I thought this would be another cliché Christian romance novel, but I was completely wrong, instead I got an intense war drama, though there is some romance in it.

Set in the Netherlands near the end of WWII, Corneal de Vries has already loss her husband to the war, but she plans on doing anything she can to protect her younger brother, Johan, just as the Nazis are invading their country.

Johan isn't a little boy anymore; he is a twenty-year-old who is more than willing to sacrifice his life to save his country. He sneaks outside late one night to put a Dutch flag on a fallen soldier's body, but he finds a wounded Dutch Resistance member, Gerrit Laninga. Not knowing what else to do, he brings Gerrit to his sister.

Harboring a wanted man can lead to dangerous consequences, but Cornelia's faith won't let her abandon him. She helps nurse Gerrit back to health. There is something about this stranger that sparks passion back into her, something that has been missing from her life ever since her husband died. Of course a romance blossoms between Cornelia and Gerrit, leading her to follow him in the Resistance.

Like I said above, I have read several WWII books, mostly where a woman is back at home in the US waiting for her boyfriend or husband to come home from the war. Snow on the Tulips is completely different by throwing the characters and the readers into the war itself. The author does a wonderful job creating memorable characters and an intriguing plot. Overall, Snow on the Tulips is one my favorite books from 2013!
