Review:

Aliens are in our neighborhood! Well, at least they arrived on DVD back in September with the release of ABC's The Neighbors: The Complete First Season, featuring a gag reel and deleted scenes as the bonus features.

The Neighbors stars Lenny Ventio and Jami Gertz as Mary and Debby Weaver, who, along with their three children (Max, Abby and Amber) move from the big city to a gated community called "Hidden Hills" in New Jersey. Upon arriving they instantly notice the odd behavior of all the neighbors, especially Larry Bird, his wife, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and their two kids, Reggie Jackson and Dick Butkus. At first the Weavers think their new neighbors are crazy, but it turns out they are aliens from another planet.
The episodes on the three-disc set are:

Disc One:
  • Pilot
  • Journey To The Center Of The Mall
  • Things Just Got Real
  • Bathroom Etiquette
  • Halloween-ween
  • Larry Bird And The Iron Throne
  • 50 Shades Of Green
  • Thanksgiving Is For The Bird-Kersees

Disc Two:
  • Merry Crap-mas
  • Juan Of The Dead
  • The Gingerbread Man
  • Cold War
  • Dream Weavers
  • The Black Nine
  • Space Invaders
  • Mother Clubbers

Disc Three:
  • Larry Bird Presents An Oscar-Winning Film By Larry Bird
  • Camping
  • I Believe I Can Drive
  • Sing Like A Larry Bird
  • Mo Purses Mo Money Mo Problems
  • It Has Begun...

I recall seeing a few advertisements for The Neighbors last fall, but it looked a little silly to me. Plus, the whole aliens thing was done on 3rd Rock From The Sun in the late 90s, but when I was offered a chance to review the DVD I thought I would give the series a try. The pilot introduces the group of aliens who arrived on Earth ten years ago, took human form and settled in a gated community. Everything was fine until a family decided to leave, which the Weavers buys their house and moves into the community. Though it starts out a little weak, the series does pick up the pace along with the quirky humor. At first glance, you might think the acting is awful, but it is just the way the alien neighbors react to the Weavers and to humanity itself. The Neighbors is a surprisingly underrated comedy, though it may not win an Emmy, it is still worth checking out for a few laughs.
