Review:

The Power Rangers mania continues with Lionsgate releasing Power Rangers Samurai: The Ultimate Duel on DVD this Tuesday, July 16, which is the final volume in the first season. (The second season was retitled Super Samurai.) I received a complimentary copy of the DVD in exchange for my honest review. Today is a perfect time for me to post the review as the franchise airs on Nickelodeon on Saturdays, when it is not on hiatus.

The Samurai Rangers (Jayden, Kevin, Emily, Mia, Mike, and Antonio) have no time for a day off as the Master Xandred's powers are slowly returning and the Sanzu River is starting to seep into the real world, leading the Rangers to visit the Tengen Gate and retrieve The Black Box, the most powerful Samurai weapon ever to exist, which is a good thing as they must fight off the Nighloks, giant Moogers, web-shooting Arachnitor, a dream-invading Rhinosnorus, and the giant Spitfangs. To make matters worse, Jayden must have the ultimate duel with Decker!

From left to right: The Green Ranger ("Mike," left), the Pink Ranger ("Mia," left center), the Blue Ranger ("Kevin," right center) and the Yellow Ranger ("Emily," right) star in Lionsgate Home Entertainment's POWER RANGERS SAMURAI: THE ULTIMATE DUEL VOLUME 5.

The four episodes on this single-disc are:

  • The Tengen Gate
  • Broken Dreams
  • Boxed In
  • The Ultimate Duel

Bonus Features:

  • Character Gallery
  • "Mega" Flash Mob Video
  • "Train Like a Ranger" Video
  • English 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio
  • Spanish and French 2.0 Dolby Digital Audio

From left to right: the Blue Ranger ("Kevin," left), the Red Ranger ("Jayden," center) and the Green Ranger ("Mike," right) star in Lionsgate Home Entertainment's POWER RANGER SAMURAI: THE ULTIMATE DUEL VOLUME 5.

I'm aware there is some backlash against the series from some fans, but I don't see any problems with the series. Yes, the acting may not be the best, but Power Rangers have never had the best acting to begin with. The Rangers don't have a social life, they are mostly all work and no play, but aren't they suppose to be all serious all the time as they stared their training to be Samurais when they were children, that is all they have ever known.

The most interesting storyline in the series is with so-called villains Decker and Dayu, whose sad origin is finally revealed and you finally find out why Decker need to duel Jayden so badly. Overall, The Ultimate Duel has four action-packed that any fan will enjoy watching.
