Review:

Last week, I listened to the audiobook On Blazing Wings by L. Ron Hubbard courtesy of Galaxy Press in exchange for my honest review. The story was first published in the May 1940 issue of Five-Novels Monthly, a time when many authors (young and old) published stories in pulp magazines. During the 1930s and 1940s (otherwise known as the Golden Age), L. Ron Hubbard wrote 153 short stories from adventures in the sky to journeys on other planets.

On Blazing Wings centers on an American wannabe artist, who pays the bills by being an ace fighter pilot for hire for other countries, despite their differences in politics. His next mission is to go after the Russian Communists, whom are planning on destroying a Finland supply base. While in combat, David's plane is shot down and it seems to be end for him. Or is it?

David wakes up in an afterlife land called Puhjola, where other shot-down pilots of war go to after death. Upon arrival, he is told that his fate has already been set and it cannot be changed. When David returns to real world, he will meet a beautiful Russian woman and fall madly in love with her. This woman happens to be an officer of ranks and she will be the death of him. Despite receiving this information, David is told he will not remember anything about Puhjola when he leaves.

He mysteriously wakes up inside his burning plane, but is quickly dragged out and is beaten by Russian soldiers. David would have died if it wasn't for the beautiful Russian woman, just as Deja Vu kicks in. Can David change his own destiny?

Each new audiobook I review from the Stories from the Golden Age keeps surprising me. On Blazing Wings is a fast-paced adventure tale with a Twilight Zone twist, a great voice cast, and amazing sound effects. The story goes by fast as I didn't realize it was over two hours long. Overall, I enjoyed listening to this exciting adventure and I recommend it others.
